Summer Blooms with Evergreen Carpet of Sedge

Berkeley sedge creates a dense, weed suppressing groundcover and is tolerant of both sun and shade. It's maintained with a simple well-timed cut back and will then remain fresh and handsome nearly year-round. Its rich deep green color is the perfect foil for the vivid, plush plumes of the astilbe and the cool lime-green panicles of Hydrangea 'Limelight'. In the far back, an evergreen clumping bamboo makes an effective backdrop. The big, bold blue hosta is a pleasing contrast of texture and color. The Japanese Stewartia towards the back, on the far right is a subtle presence in this photo, but with its sweet white camellia-like blooms in early summer, its wonderful fall color, and gorgeous bark year-round, its a definite asset to this scene.
