Plant Description
A showy new variety with large, fragrant bright red magnolia-like blooms.Take full advantage of the glossy foliage and sweet apple-like scent by planting near an entry or outdoor living space. Useful in shrub borders and native plant gardens. Deer resistant! Long-lasting flowers hold well in arrangements and are great for dried potpourri. Leaves, seed pods and bark have a spicy scent when crushed. Deciduous.

Care Information
Adaptable to most moist, well drained soils. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Thrives in heat and humidity. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Pruning time: summer after flowering.

History
This new Calycanthus was developed through a breeding program at North Carolina State University,Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Station, Mills River, North Carolina. 'Aphrodite' is an F.sub.1 hybrid between Calycanthus chinensis and Calycanthus occidentalis.
