Picea glauca 'Pendula,' commonly known as the Weeping White Spruce, is an evergreen tree characterized by its slender, upright, conical to pyramidal shape. It has a robust central leader and gracefully drooping branches adorned with short, densely packed blue-green needles with a whitish cast. Depending on the strength of the central leader, this tree can reach a height of 12 to 40 ft. while maintaining a narrow spread of 5 to 8 ft. It thrives in summer heat and exhibits exceptional hardiness. Ideal for use as an accent specimen or in group plantings for windbreaks or screens. It is best situated as a focal point, away from walks, streets, and sidewalks to avoid the need for branch pruning. It flourishes in moist, well-drained soils under full sun, tolerating some light shade. Optimal performance occurs in cold winter climates with cool summers, and good air circulation aids in reducing moisture on the dense foliage. This tree emanates a pungently aromatic scent when its needles are crushed. Although it faces no serious insect or disease problems, susceptibility to needle and stem rust, canker, trunk and root rot exists. Potential pests include the yellow-headed spruce sawfly, spruce budworm, and eastern spruce beetle, with mites posing a common threat that, if not addressed, can cause significant harm. Caution is advised in urban environments with high pollution and salt spray levels.
