Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in Red'

Vision in Red Chinese Astilbe

Deciduous, Herbaceous Perennial

Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in Red' blooms in midsummer, sending up upright plumes of deep red buds that open to pinkish-red flowers on red stems. The foliage is bronze-green and fine-textured. Grows 18–24 inches tall.

Tolerates full shade to part shade; morning sun is fine. In more sun, water needs increase.

The one non-negotiable is consistent moisture. Astilbes need reliably moist, rich soil—let them dry out and the leaf margins go brown and crispy fast. This is not a plant for dry spots or infrequent irrigation. Fertilize in late spring before bloom. Leave the old foliage standing through winter for protection; cut it back in spring. Divide every 3–4 years to keep plants vigorous.

Deer resistant.
