Carpenteria californica 'Elizabeth'

Bush Anemone

Evergreen Shrub

Elizabeth, a selected variety of the California native bush anemone, Carpenteria californica, is more compact than the species, but shares its hardy constitution. Its smaller stature makes it easier to fit into city gardens and it's particularly well-suited to low-water hellstrips where it can be paired with other water-saving, drought-tolerant plants. It's a handsome addition to the garden with year-round appeal thanks to its semi-glossy, dark green, evergreen foliage, but it really shines in late spring, early summer when profuse blooms of fragrant white flowers with yellow stamens cover the shrub. Consider limbing it up a bit to appreciate its flaky bark; another lovely attribute.
