Heather's Island-Inspired Garden Retreat

Heather's back garden reads like another place entirely. Hardy palms (Trachycarpus), hardy banana (Musa basjoo), Tetrapanax, Schefflera, Canna, and Fatsia go big and bold—unmistakably exotic. Long-blooming hardy fuchsias and towering lilies bring the flower power. Mahonia, ferns, Arisaema, and more round out the foliage. Together, it adds up to a real sense of place—another place, a tropical place.

What was once a blank slate is now a lush, plant-filled garden built around a custom island-inspired pavilion, with a dining table for entertaining underneath it and a second, separate patio nearby set up as an outdoor living room—garden beds dividing the two so each space feels like its own room, with plenty of places for people to gather.
